The Artist, the Poet and the Actress are people who live with the illusion that art can save and isolate them from the great social movements of their time. Each has withdrawn into their own world, built upon personal moral codes and rules. The Poet’s death by the bullet of a hired assassin is the logical consequence of his nihilistic rebellion against violence and cruelty. This event pushes the Artist to emerge from the silence of his studio. Parallel to the drama of the three characters, scenes unfold depicting the destruction of a Bulgarian village following the suppression of the September Uprising of 1923. This devastation is recounted by the old villager Danil, and his story evolves into an artistic summation of every era of violence – when a person cannot remain indifferent.
